Is the Stock Market Open Today? Here Are the Trading Hours for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is here—and markets have given investors plenty to be grateful for in 2023.

So far this year, the
Dow Jones Industrial Average
has gained 6.4%, while the
S&P 500
has climbed 19% higher, and the
Nasdaq Composite
has soared 36%.

Here’s what investors should know about trading hours on Thursday.

Is the Stock Market Open or Closed on Thanksgiving?

The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market will be closed on Thursday in observance of Thanksgiving, as will the U.S. bond market. Over-the-counter markets will also be closed.

Are International Markets Open on Thanksgiving?

Foreign stock exchanges—including those in London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Toronto—will be open Thursday.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange, however, will be closed Thursday for Labor Thanksgiving Day.

Are Banks and Post Offices Open Today? What About Private Carriers?

Banks and post offices will be closed on Thursday. Most services from UPS and FedEx will be shuttered, too.

What Else Should I Know About Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving, which gets its roots from a 1621 harvest meal between the Pilgrims and Wampanoag people, is a federal holiday celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday in November in the U.S. For many Americans, Thanksgiving festivities involve time with loved ones, expressing what they are thankful for—and celebrating with an array of dishes such as turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberries, and pie.

Holiday travel is expected to be the third-busiest period since the AAA started tracking it in 2000, with an estimated 55.4 million people planning to go 50 miles or more from home, Barron’s reported last week.

How Has the Stock Market Performed Around Thanksgiving?

If history is any indication, markets may post small gains this week. Since 1950, on average, the
S&P 500
has edged 0.7% higher during Thanksgiving week, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
